Four years ago, I seriously considered moving to Denmark. I adore their culture and especially the hygge atmosphere and style of living. In the end, I chose Prague – it’s still closer to my parents in Slovakia. However, my love for hygge persisted, so I began to develop small hygge-inspired habits during my remote work.

Why I Prefer Hygge Rituals During Work and Days Off
Simple rituals that bring comfort
Sometimes I feel bad. I know everybody does. Work sucks, sleep doesn’t come easily, and I just don’t feel comfortable. What now? My cure: a blanket, a candle, coffee (I really love pumpkin cake coffee from Nespresso), and a really good book.
Most of the time, I can’t influence what’s happening in the world around me. But I can influence how my days are going.
How books became my favorite way to relax
On difficult workdays, I start with the bare minimum: coding, code review, reading a science article, and checking part of the roadmap. Lunch is quick and simple (I admire the ready chef boxes from Rohlik), and then I give myself time to rest. My favorite way to relax is with a book. Earplugs help me focus, and I feel significantly less stressed.

A Hygge Weekend: Cleaning, Movement, and Cozy Moments
Movement as part of self-care
And how about days off? My weekends usually start with cleaning and movement. I’m still battling obesity, so I walk at least 8,000 steps daily and do a mix of strength training, cardio, and yoga.
Tea, blankets, and cozy time with my husband
After that, it’s time for books or a good film with my husband. I love cozy details like pillows, blankets, and a big cup of tea. In Prague, I usually shop for tea at Leros, and a few weeks ago I bought the perfect teapot – a true game-changer. It makes 3 liters of tea, and since my husband is a tea fan too, we really enjoy it together.

Starting the Day Slowly – Yes, Please!
My morning coffee ritual
Whether I’m tired or not, I love starting my day slowly. Two years ago, I won a Nespresso coffee machine in a competition, and since then, my morning coffee ritual has been essential. Nothing fancy – just a regular latte.
After coffee, I sit down at my desk and write my To-Do List for the day. I like doing it in the morning, because I know how my energy levels are, and I can adapt my schedule accordingly. Then I switch to tea and enjoy a calm start. Working remotely means I don’t have to deal with traffic jams, which is another plus.
My favorite banana smoothie recipe
Breakfast is usually a smoothie – it’s a great way to start the day, and I prepare it for my husband as well. He’s been a great support in my obesity journey. Here’s my favorite recipe:
Banana Smoothie
- 2 ripe bananas
- 500 ml low-fat milk (1.5%)
- 44 g oatmeal
- 1 tsp peanut butter
- 1 tbsp cocoa
- cinnamon to taste

Cozy Home, Cozy Life
Why we switched from candles to aroma diffuser
I love a good scent at home, but my husband doesn’t like candles (or rather, the fire risk). This year, we made a great compromise: I bought a Yankee Candle aroma diffuser. It smells amazing, and there’s no fire involved.
My favorite home scents
My top picks are clean laundry and cherry essences – they instantly make our home feel cozy.
Digital Detox and Family Time
Why I avoid social media in the evenings
In the evenings, I try to avoid endless social media scrolling. If I’m feeling down, I prefer a calm, negativity-free evening.
Healthy baking as hygge therapy
So what do I do instead of scrolling? I bake – in a way that supports my health goals. Over time, I’ve found a few favorite recipes: bean brownies, banana cookies, and curd cake. Baking helps me disconnect from work and reconnect with my family.

Final Thoughts: Why Hygge Is Perfect for Me
I love hygge because I love coziness and good food. I love the way it helps me slow down, recharge, and enjoy the little things. For me, hygge isn’t just a word – it’s the lifestyle I choose when I want to feel grounded, balanced, and truly relaxed.
