Perfecting My Home Office Setup for Remote Work: Comfort, Productivity, and Health

2. April 2025

Since November, I’ve been working remotely, and it’s been an absolute game-changer. I’m able to fully focus on my tasks, and after years of struggle, I’ve started exercising daily—running, yoga, and strength training (thanks to Fitify!). However, to make working from home truly productive, I needed a quiet and comfortable workspace, so I decided to upgrade my home office.

My Work Setup Renovation Journey

It all started with a trip to Ikea. I was on a mission to find a desk that would meet my needs. Initially, I tried using an old Hemnes table from Ikea, but after three months of back pain and frequent migraines, it became clear I needed a change.

New Setup:

  • IDÅSEN desk: Adjustable, sturdy, and fits my aesthetic. It allows me to adjust the height, making it a perfect fit for my work needs.
  • BOLLSIDAN laptop stand: Adjustable, enabling me to switch to a standing position when working.

The Importance of the Right Chair

Another essential upgrade was a comfortable chair. My old armchair simply wasn’t cutting it. I decided to go with the ALEFJÄLL chair, which I had admired for years. It’s not only stylish but incredibly supportive for my back, significantly reducing my pain each day.

Key Points:

  • ALEFJÄLL chair: Provides great support for the back, helping reduce discomfort.
  • Cable organizer: A simple addition that saves your sanity by keeping cords neatly arranged.

I’ve learned my lesson: Don’t work from just anything. A good table and chair are essential for your well-being. Trust me, IDÅSEN and ALEFJÄLL have been a perfect combination for me.

A New Pillow for Better Sleep

On my Ikea trip, I also picked up a NORDSTÅLÖRT memory foam pillow. I’ve suffered from migraines for years, mainly because I never paid attention to my ergonomics. Two years ago, I bought a new mattress, which was a game-changer, but my old pillow just wasn’t working.

Benefits of NORDSTÅLÖRT Pillow:

  • Relieves neck and back pain
  • Promotes restful, pain-free sleep

Now, with the NORDSTÅLÖRT pillow, I sleep soundly and wake up refreshed, without the nagging neck or back pain.

Incorporating Yoga and Running

To improve my health further, I moved a treadmill into my office space. I now spend about 25 minutes a day walking on it, and the benefits are incredible—both in terms of focus and mood.

Exercise Routine:

  • Treadmill: 25 minutes daily, boosting focus and energy.
  • Yoga: I’ve started yoga again, which has significantly improved my posture.

To complement the treadmill, I also started doing yoga again, which has significantly improved my posture and flexibility. As I sit here now, I’m consciously sitting straighter—it’s a big win!

The Power of Natural Light

Lighting plays a crucial role in my productivity. I moved my desk closer to the terrace door, where I get natural light all day. While I also bought a small lamp for extra illumination, the natural light makes a huge difference in my energy levels and focus.

Embracing Minimalism and Greenery

I’m a big fan of minimalism because it brings me peace. My workspace is now clutter-free, with only the essentials on my desk. I’ve added a few succulents, as I love the green color, and it adds a touch of life to my office without the hassle of maintaining plants I don’t need.

Minimalism Tips:

  • Keep only the essentials on your desk.
  • Add greenery (succulents work great) for a calming atmosphere.

Conclusion: The Key to a Productive Home Office

In conclusion, this home office renovation has truly transformed the way I work remotely. If you work from home, don’t be like Katarina—invest in a good table and chair. Your back will thank you, and your workspace will be ready for that extra plant you’ve been wanting. It’s all about comfort, productivity, and health.
