Thank goodness it’s Friday! My task today was to work on the documentation for the features I wrote this week. Gradually, I navigated through the tricky layers of Service and Controller. Today, I still need to reply to messages, and then I can officially declare the weekend open. When I first started programming, there were weekends I spent glued to my phone screen. That was a mistake because I felt even worse after the weekend. Today, I thought I’d take a more relaxed approach and share how I usually unwind.
1. Fresh Air is Better than My Workspace
I work from home, which means I always hide away in my office during the workday. The only company I have here is my cup of tea. I love my workspace; I’ve set it up to feel comfortable. Having a height-adjustable desk is a real win. But I truly look forward to weekends when I can trade my office for the garden and fresh air. I go for walks in nature, and I don’t want to see my phone at all!
- Short walks around the block or long hikes in nature help not only to clear my mind but also to improve my mood.
- Plus, moving around is great for our bodies!
2. Super Workouts Always Lift My Spirits
If my 15-year-old self read these lines, she would probably think I’m not normal and that I’ve lost it over the years. I was exactly the type who absolutely hated exercise and preferred reading books and engaging in intellectual pursuits. I still choose to stay at home, where I can shock my husband with my sudoku-solving skills. However, almost every day after work, I dedicate time to training. Weekends are no different. Besides walks, I enjoy yoga, strength training, pilates, and running.
- I started regular workouts recently, and I can confirm that I’m happier and feel more relaxed after work this way.
3. I Have Enough Creativity at Work, but on Weekends I Take It to the Next Level
Anyone who has designed even a simple application can confirm that programming requires a huge dose of creativity (especially debugging!). I don’t want to design anything over the weekend, but I love to draw, create planners for effective time management, jot down new ideas for articles, and bake. Being gluten-free means baking also requires a dose of creativity!
- Drawing and creative planning help recharge my mental batteries.
- Baking is both therapeutic and delicious!
4. Gardening
I love gardening, and since we moved into a house, I love it even more. This year, I grew my first batch of peppers, and I’m thrilled with them. I even gardened in my apartment – I grew herbs and flowers on the balcony. It’s a fantastic activity that helps me unwind.
5. Meditation
Meditation techniques were a big unknown for me, but they have long been on my list of things I want to learn. I started dabbling in mindfulness quite recently, and it’s also a great way to reset my brain after a demanding week.
Conclusion
Rest and relaxation are just as important to me as planning and performing well during the workweek. Spending my free time on my phone was a poor decision, and I’m glad I’m changing that. Plus, I’m no longer afraid of FOMO!
