I start every morning with training and a few pages of a book. It’s a much better way than reaching for your phone first thing in the morning and ruining the first hours of your day with negative messages on social networks. Let’s be honest with ourselves – social networks are full of negativity. I like this morning ritual. My favorite development book is Atomic Habits by James Clear. I have read the book many times, and today it occurred to me for the first time how atomic habits can improve the life of a software developer. If you are also interested, my article today will answer you.
1. Productivity improvement
Every weekday at 9:00 a.m. I sit down at my desk and start the computer. There are many mornings when I would rather just stay on the couch, but this little habit saves my productivity. Atomic habits are about tiny habits, programs that we execute every day. When I started with software development, it meant for me solving a task in Hacker Rank and immediately after that an hour of learning about technologies.
My atomic habits at the beginning of the bottom:
- Preparation of mint tea
- Starting the computer
- Writing to-do list
- Writing mails
- Cleaning the mailbox
- Start of the first task
2. Better organization of work
At the beginning of my career, it was not difficult for me to master a programming language, an ecosystem or work with a database. It was difficult for me to question the time estimate and the organization of the project I was working on. Thanks to atomic habits, I built a system for planning my weekly work and project work. keeping an organized to-do list and using project management tools can greatly improve your ability to meet deadlines and keep track of progress.
3. Professional development
The worst thing for a developer is to stand still. The IT world is developing at a fast pace and it is crucial to be able to keep up with it. At the beginning, I had the feeling that I had to master an enormous amount of knowledge. It helped me learn a little something every day. One day I studied and tried Nginx, another day I studied database indexing. My goal was to master 1 new technology every week. It helped me improve my qualifications.
4. Avoiding procrastination
Let him who is innocent throw a stone. It was difficult for me to overcome procrastination. I morbidly put off tasks until later, only to be troubled by remorse. The Two-Minute Rule has helped me – if a task is done in less than two minutes, I’ll go for it. It doesn’t take me long to answer an email, it unlocks my mental capacity to focus on difficult tasks and I can make progress. I don’t get into the cycle of procrastination.
5. Balance between work and personal life
Learning to relax is a valuable skill. For me it was the introduction of priorities. I value exercise, walks, reading and blogging as much as finishing a task at work. I noticed that if I rest, I manage my work better and more efficiently.
Conclusion
Atomic habits are a great game changer for me. They enable me to master my duties and not succumb to procrastination. Share with me your tips on how to maintain productivity in the comments.
